5.0 out of 5 stars Indispensable systematic overview of Stott’s biblical and theological worldview

Reviewed in the United States on September 18, 2021

The late Anglican pastor John Stott was (and thanks to his readily available books and recorded sermons and lectures, still is) one of the most significant evangelical leaders in the English-speaking world. Along with J. I. Packer and C.S. Lewis (who of course was not ordained), Stott’s lasting influence on Christianity is difficult to overstate. Even if you have read his many outstanding books like The Cross of Christ and Basic Christianity, there has never really been a systematic overview of his position on standard theological topics like God, Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, the Church, Salvation, etc.

Ted Schroder served under Stott in the late 1960s as assistant rector at All Souls Langham Place, and he and his family maintained a close relationship with Stott for the rest of Stott’s life. Schroder’s book tightly weaves together Stott’s biblical and theological views in a way that helps the reader see the big picture. Because it is well-referenced, you can easily look up the source material. It also provides an excellent updated bibliography as well.

I would assert that this book, along with another book by Timothy Dudley-Smith called Authentic Christianity and a new book by Tim Chester called Stott on the Christian Life: Between Two Worlds, are the three most important references you could have to gain a deeper understanding of the whole of Stott’s biblical perspective. This book by Ted Schroder, however, is the best. While it does not and should not take the place of reading Stott’s own works, it is truly invaluable and a gift to us all.
