This past year I have been reading a number of books on aging to gain some wisdom on this stage of my life. Some are personal memoirs and others are somewhat academic. Many are representatives of their eras and some are dated. However the most accessible and inspirational of them is A GOOD OLD AGE, by Derek Prime (1931-2020) who was pastor of Charlotte Chapel in Edinburgh for many years. The foreword is by his former assistant and well-known preacher Alistair Begg.

Derek Prime takes the alphabet and writes a short chapter on each letter representing a virtue, closing with a prayer.

  • A is for acceptance
  • B is for believe
  • C is for contentment
  • D is for discipleship
  • E is for encourage
  • F is for fear of God
  • G is for godliness
  • H is for hope
  • I is for intercession
  • J is for joy
  • K is for knowledge
  • L is for love
  • M is for meditate
  • N is for non-judgmental
  • O is for obedience
  • P is for peaceable
  • Q is for quickness
  • R is for read
  • S is for serve
  • T is for talk
  • U is for understand
  • V is for victorious
  • W is for walk
  • X is for the X factor
  • Y is for yearn
  • Z is for zeal

The book is meant to be read one day at a time for each letter. I am reading it for the second time as it contains a great deal of wisdom and encouragement. I recommend it wholeheartedly.
