Inscribed above the players’ entrance to the Centre Court at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club known as Wimbledon are the third and fourth lines of the second stanza of Rudyard Kipling’s poem IF.

The poem also hangs on the wall beside my chair! It celebrates perseverance and endurance over the long run of life. As Jesus said, “He who stands firm [endures] to the end will be saved.” (Matthew 10:22 and 24:13) A prayer for courage and strength.

My mother gave my sister and me a copy of the poem,IF. Lane and Paul heard it over and over. It is beautiful. Thank you for reminding me of it.
Mother and Daddy were very deep thinkers . They read all the time and instilled in me the value of reading. For this , among many words of wisdom from both parents , I am most grateful !
